Is Dryer Exhaust Dangerous?

The safest thing is not to use the dryer at all. A clothesline either outdoors or inside your home is cheaper and safer.

Dryers use electrical energy, gas or propane to create the high temperatures necessary to properly dry clothes. Warm air is expelled from the dryer during the cycle, and this exhaust can contain some elements that are not desirable to have in the home.

Facts

Properly installed and vented dryers take the exhausted air used throughout the drying cycle and channel it away from the home.

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide, which is a natural byproduct of combustion, is present in the exhaust of natural gas and propane powered dryers.

Lint

While lint traps remove a portion of what is generated in the drying cycle, most of it is taken away from the dryer through the exhaust. Lint can collect in the dryer vents, creating a fire hazard, and it can block the elimination of carbon monoxide, which can enter the living spaces of homes.

Moisture

While not inherently dangerous, moisture can encourage the growth of mildew, mold and bacteria if not properly vented out of the home. One to two gallons of water remain in clothes after the final washer rinse cycle, and this water is present in dryer exhaust as vapor.

Safety

With all dryers, and particularly with those that are gas fired, it is critical to vent the exhaust to the outside and away from air intakes like air conditioning systems and furnaces.

Tips for Staying Warm

Wear a hat, hood, or scarf, as most heat is lost through the head.
Wear layers, as they provide better insulation and warmth.
Keep fingertips, earlobes, and noses covered if you go outside.
Keep clothing dry; if a layer becomes wet, remove it.

Clearing Snow and Dangling Ice from Roofs

Snow and rain that collect on roofs become heavy and cause damage to buildings.
Remove leaves and debris from roof drains to prevent water from collecting.
In addition to cleaning out gutters, clear snow from roofs and drains.
Flat roofs require special attention. Snow and water should be removed with drainage systems or manually.

Here are some really useful safety hints for your home this Winter:

Fireplaces

Make sure that chimneys are properly cleaned – to ensure this, have them inspected at the beginning of each cold season.
Use a protective fireplace screen to protect people and animals from getting too close to the fire/heat source.
Do not use flammable liquids in the fireplace.
Do not burn paper in the fireplace – lit pieces of paper can float out of chimneys and land on neighboring buildings. Only use dry wood – not wood/boughs from live-cut trees as these lit particles can also float out of the chimney.
Do not burn wrapping paper in the fireplace — toxic smoke is released when it is burned.
Make sure the fire is completely out before you go to sleep.
Never close the damper when there are hot ashes in the fireplace.
