Don’t overload your washing machine!

Whilst it is a good idea to fully fill your washing machine with dirty laundry before using it to save power and water,  you should not cram it to overflowing. The clothes will not get clean and you risk the machine overflowing and flooding your laundry. Follow the   instructions on the washing powder box – extra powder will not make your clothes cleaner and will just clog your machine.

Once your washing is done, consider hanging it up to dry on a clothesline or airer, rather than using your clothes dryer all the time. This will save a lot of electricity and your laundry will smell really fresh.

Fat People Account for Gasoline Price Increases and Bigger Carbon Footprint, Study Says

Here is another good reason to lose those extra pounds!

A study of the Resources for the Future  institute from a few years ago (2009, more exactly) revealed the impact that obesity has on a man’s carbon footprint. It showed that even a 10 percent increase in the rate of overweight and obesity among the population affected the miles per gallon by 2.5%, in the bad direction. This, in turn, created a 30 cent increase in gasoline prices.

“Our simulation results show that had the prevalence of overweight and obesity stayed at the level in 1981 (about 20 percentage points lower than that in 2005), the average MPG of new vehicles demanded in 2005 would have been about 4.6 percent higher, everything else being equal. The improved fuel efficiency implies total gasoline savings of about 138 million barrels and reduction in CO2 emissions of 58 million tons over the lifetime of these vehicles,” said the study led by Shanjun Li, Yanyan Liu, and Junjie Zhang.

“Extra-large Americans get up and go to work like anyone else and they need vehicles to get them there and back. Is the auto industry paying attention?” In that story, interviewed carmakers deny that they target obese people per se. Instead, they indeed pay attention to what the customer wants. “We’re finding that people say, ‘We want more space,’” said Sage Marie, Manager of Honda Product Planning, for AOL Autos.

Honda Civic GX Becomes the Greenest Car of 2011

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy has published its annual list of the top 12 greenest electric cars of the year, but with a 12th-place tie, the list includes 13 vehicles.

With the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid and Nissan Leaf electric car now being delivered in the U.S., experts would have expected that one of them would occupy the first place, but they were wrong, because Leaf earned a second place while Volt ranked 12th with the Mazda 2.  Honda Civic GX, a model produced on a limited scale that runs on compressed natural gas, has been ranked first, becoming the greenest car of 2011.

Nano-Coating Could Increase Aircraft Fuel Efficiency by Reducing Drag 39%

Think what a difference this would make to the fuel consumption  for  long distance travel!

In the United Kingdom, Easy Jet Airlines plans to apply a revolutionary nano-technology coating on all of their aircraft in order to reduce carbon emissions by up to two per cent and also the fuel consumption.

Measuring less than a micron in thickness, the ultra-thin coating is already being used on US military aircraft but it is for the first time that it has been tested on commercial airliners.

Currently, the company has coated eight airplanes and wants to compare them with the rest of the 194-strong fleet at the beginning of next year.

Generally speaking, this technology is a polymer that enables a high performance solution to cross-link and bond with the surface materials to which it is being applied. The paint applied on the aircraft has microscopic “hills and valleys” that fill up with debris and dirt. The polymer contains hard, durable acrylic elements, forming a barrier to prevent penetration by contaminants.

The UK suppliers of the coating, tripleO, claims this substance weighs only 113 grams, reducing drag by up to 39%. Once the tests will be finished and the results positive, certainly other airlines will use the nano-coating, making the aviation industry become greener.

Beat the hot water habit & save the planet!

By simply switching the dial on your washing machine from Hot to Cold you can save money on your power bills without compromising the cleanliness of your clothes.

Using cold water can save you up to 80% of the energy used by your machine because for a typical warm wash most of the energy used comes from the process of heating the water.

Hot washing is tougher on clothes – shrinking and damaging  fabric as well as  fading the colours.

Once your washing is done, consider using a clothesline,  either indoors or outside, rather than an electric clothes dryer. By making these small and easy changes to your laundry routine you will save money for yourself and help the environment for everyone!
